Halloween has always been my favorite holiday, even as a child, I’d take Halloween over Christmas or my birthday. And, I knew it was approaching because my “parents” would bring out “the skeleton” to decorate.
It was the early 80’s, and this flimsy cardboard, sickly green, jointed skeleton was my favorite decoration. No matter where we were, it wasn’t Halloween until that kelly green guy, with the flocked, black accents and red eyes, went up on the door.
It wasn’t too many years later I was hanging it, because I was taller (it was probably about 5′ tall) but still – that meant my favorite time of year was in process.
It became the official sign of the season.
It finally gave way, as we all do in life, many years ago. It just collapsed into some bizarre pile of tattered paper “bones” and memories. Considering my childhood, it’s far and few that I have a good one (memory, that is). That silly paper skeleton was one.
Even through I’m often labeled “goth”, skulls and skeletons aren’t really my thing. I much prefer bats. But, because of that stupid, green Halloween decoration, I have a soft spot in my heart for them.
To be honest, I enjoy messing with people who don’t know me very well (religious, door-to-door types, come to mind).
I have been known to answer the door to those religious “pushers”, holding my black cat and a bloody prop knife. However, I would invite them in for tea or coffee, if I had these cool sugar spoons and some skull sugar cubes to offer them.
(No offense to any religion, but after I tell you I’m not interested a couple times, and you continue to push it, all bets are off.)
Now, if you’re “chillin'” with a more “lively” bunch, these skull ice cube molds, might be a bit more festive. Especially in some of these skeletal bar basics (like glasses and shakers). Maybe with The Skeleton , which is a cocktail made with Root Beer and Kailua – interesting concept.
This skull themed mirror is also classy and creepy. I’d leave this up, year ’round, in our house – but, we’re those people, remember?
Find some ghoulish outdoor decorating ideas and Martha Stewart, the crafting Queen, demonstrates those glittered skulls and a few other cranial crafts (the treat bags are super cute, while the treat bag labels are a bit more sinister. Don’t forget to check out all of her Halloween decorating ideas, which are grouped by theme, if skeletons aren’t your thing – no bones about it, she has some awesome ideas!).
If you’ve bought a bag of bones or other plastic parts that seem a little too pristine, learn how to age plastic to give them an aged, more antique feel.
Glowing, skeleton hands would be intense if you don’t plan on having much additional lighting, and while not skeletons, per se, undead pumpkins could easily be altered to be a little less zombie and a bit more bony.
Watch a Nightmare Before Christmas makeup tutorial and these Skeletons, and other Halloween nail art designs are adorably frightening.
